University of Huddersfield Legal Clinic

University of Huddersfield – Partners in Law

Ridley & Hall is proud of its connections with the University of Huddersfield. As well as being Partners in Law, we have supported the University in its creation of the Legal Clinic, which gives legal advice to members of the public. The advice is provided by the University’s law students under the supervision of experienced members of staff. Manging Partner, Adam Fletcher, and Head of Training, James Cook, have provided training to students on client care and complaints handling, several members of staff provide mentoring to students and we have a successful partnership whereby we offer work placements.

Investing in the Future of Law

Here at Ridley & Hall we feel it is important to invest in the future solicitors we have making their way through university. This is why we offer internship spaces wherever possible to allow for them to have an insight into a legal office working environment. By doing so we hope to help them gain the necessary experience they need to progress confidently in a career within law.

We could make a list of all the reasons undertaking an internship is beneficial but believe the testimonials from our current interns speak for themselves:

We have a fantastic relationship with Ridley & Hall who take on our students as interns and provide them with

invaluable experience in a working legal practice. The feedback I have received from students has been very positive and they have all learned a tremendous amount through their internship.

It has been an honour for me to carry out an internship at Ridley & Hall. I have been working in the Community Care department and I have nothing but praise for the team there. I have been made to feel at ease and whenever I have required any assistance there has always been a helping hand and a smiling face to point me in the right direction.

Having completed my degree this opportunity to get experience in the legal field was vital for me in order to prepare

me for the next stage of my career. Luckily for me Ridley & Hall is a place where interns like other members of staff are treated very well and their progression is noted and rewarded. In my case starting in a department in which I had very little knowledge as it was an area of law which I did not cover in my degree programme. I have managed to work my way up from basic tasks such as filing to actually dealing with clients and having the chance to represent the firm.

From my personal experience I can surely say that interns are managed and taught very well at Ridley & Hall I therefore am very grateful for the help and support I have been given.

I am currently in my 3rd year studying law, at the University of Huddersfield. The area of law I am working in, is the Private Client sector. From working at Ridley & Hall, I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoy my time working here and every task I am assigned is a learning experience. I am constantly learning and developing numerous skills which complement my degree as well as gaining a true understanding of the professional side. The staff at Ridley & Hall are also extremely welcoming and are a firm open to helping and enhancing personal development; as well as supporting me through my process.

I have gained a fantastic insight into the world of conveyancing at Ridley & Hall. This is an area of law which I have considered to work in the future and was seeking some experience in the area. I now have some practical experience of sale and purchase transactions which has persuaded me to pick conveyancing as an option in the future and the experience will help me with my study of Property Law for the next academic year. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here working in a brilliant department. I would like to thank Ridley & Hall for giving me this opportunity.

Not only do we have an excellent relationship with the University of Huddersfield we also have a great connection with Greenhead College. We offer a week’s summer work placement for students to come in and get a taste of the different departments within our firm. From doing something as simple as this there is potential for a number of opportunities to arise. Our last work placement from Greenhead College was offered an office assistant role for the whole of the summer holidays within our firm.

Undertaking the role of office assistant over the summer has been an invaluable experience and has provided me with a true insight into the workings of an office environment. I have learnt that every role within an organisation, no matter at which level this may be, is crucial to the success and smooth running of a business. A lot of attention to detail and commitment is required in the role of a solicitor, and I have seen how complex case files can be and how they are put together. This experience will most definitely be beneficial to me in the future and has made me more determined to pursue a career in law. Ridley & Hall is a great firm to work for as they couple professionalism with a friendly working environment.
